AndyVision G3G records present a new release of eccentric and individual electronica by Mercurio aka Nick Prescott. This Scotsman originates from Edinburgh but has been living in Barcelona for so long now he's considered part of the ( Gaudi-styled) furniture. One of the creators behind the duo Pie Finger who released the cult classic "Dali Surprise" on the now defunct Creation Records now releases his latest collection of tracks demonstrating his wide-ranging taste and ability to tackle contrasting styles. "Mercurio" collects Nick's work over the recent years mixing together his soundtrack work for performances and his love of composing and djing breaks. The CD opens with the sound of snipping scissors followed by squelching synths, creating the sensation of having you hair cut in the chill out room of your favourite club. Smooth ambient dub tracks with lush orchestration glide unobtrusively into angular, experimental drum and bass. Nick, being foremost a guitar player, allows the guitar to appear at various stages throughout the CD creating airy breathing spaces between the tracks, on "Chillin" he subtly blends his picking with Bukemish washes and breaks. One of the highlights is "Peliculas sin Dinero", which contains a haunting arabesque vocal performance by Alexandra Rife over a lilting break, forming a perfect Café Del Mar sunset moment. The CD closes with "That Dog can't Swim" which sounds like the uncanny mixture of Jonathon Richman jamming with Augustus Pablo in a Moroccan restaurant. All in all an eclectic CD that has a place in your home and on the more chilled and discerning dance-floors out there somewhere. |
